I believe that everyone needs a great coach. Having someone to motivate you, keep you accountable and ensure that you are getting the best from yourself is what separates the elite from the mediocre.
So what makes a good coach? Here are a few things to look for:
- Passion
Hire someone who actually gives a shit and is not just out to earn a pay check. The fitness industry is riddled with these and it’s getting harder and harder to tell them apart. Use your judgement and trial different coaches until you find one that oozes passion on a regular basis.
- Education
Hire someone who is a lifelong learner. Someone who is always on the hunt for new information and constantly developing themselves as a coach. A degree in sports science is not essential, however a basic understanding of anatomy, programming and evidence based practice is.
- Commitment
If you are going to hire a performance coach/trainer you want to know they are just as invested as you are. When I coach I make sure I am more excited about reaching client goals than my clients are. I am fully invested and so are my clients. And that’s why they achieve great results.
- Good energy
Good energy is infectious. Hire someone who has lots of it and it will rub off on you. You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. If you’re training regularly then your coach will likely be one of those 5. Make a good decision.
In summary the investment you make in hiring a coach/trainer is a big decision and not one you want to take lightly. Do your research, experience training with multiple coaches before making a decision and remember that it’s ok to break up with a trainer if it’s not working out. Chances are they might be feeling the same way and you may get better results with someone more suited to your training style.
If you feel like you may be ready to start training and need guidance then please feel free to contact me. Happy to meet anyone for a coffee just to have a chat.
Gotta keep developing this industry and spreading the word via education.
Have a strong week!
